Firstly the story continues so if you start BG2 before playing BG1 you find out the ending, spoiling part of the fun of BG1 before you've looked at it. Secondly it's one big story of how your character starts out as a nobody wearing a dress and carrying a stick who should be very wary of bears and gradually becomes super powerful: you lose a lot by jumping in half way through.

But if you start with BG1 you pick up abiliies gradually, givng you time to experiment and find out what works when. Everyone has their own opinion and there are other people who don't like BG1 and only like BG2 but mine is that you're much better off starting with 1. Last edited by GKL ; 16 Jan, am. I couldn't get too far in BG1 because the game's focus was on exploration, while BG2 emphasised plot and linear quests that are rich with story.

Then, after beating BG2 two or three times, I decided to finally check BG1 and it was finally bearable and beatable for me. Wayfinder View Profile View Posts. Posted August 05, Hello, I am abaout to start Baldur's Gate 2 but I would like to know if it is neccesary to start with the first one first, greetings and excuse my english I am from spain!

Pangaea Pangaea Sorry, data for given user is currently unavailable. It isn't necessary, but I would recommend it. The games are kind of like one huge game, and the story continues.

That said, they are also somewhat separate, so you can play BG2 and still understand what goes on. Good luck whatever you choose to do, you're about to embark on an amazing journey :. Tallima Tallima Sorry, data for given user is currently unavailable. I played 2 first and then 1. And BG1 is a fantastic game, too. So I'd also recommend 1 and then 2 as well. You can carry over your character if you'd like. And there are mods that combine the two into one big game using the BG2 engine so everything looks prettier and you can use all the classes from BG2 in BG1.

Hickory Hickory Sorry, data for given user is currently unavailable. I concur with others: while it is not necessary, it is highly recommended that you start at the beginning ie. BG1 , because the storyline of BG2 continues with your character -- and other main characters -- from BG1 picking up from where BG1 ended, as the plot unfolds on your character's heritage, and why things happened as they did in BG1.

Lasivern Lasivern Sorry, data for given user is currently unavailable. I concur - one more vote for starting with BG1. As others said, getting to follow the story from beginning to end, by playing the games in the proper sequence, is highly recommended. You only get to play either game, for the first time, once. Might as well have the story, the plot twists and the mysteries revealed as you play, rather than starting off with BG2 and finding out enough about yourself that it will detract, somewhat, from getting the most enjoyment out of BG1.

Just one man's opinion, of course. Id rather it called 3, than simply Baldur Gate like Simcity, Tomb raider etc. If you're not having fun because there's low interaction with NPCs, the story is kind of slow, things like that, then BG2 is definitely better. Your email address will not be published.
